    The Marketing Audit Framework That Reveals What Is Actually Broken

    Most marketing audits fail before they begin because they audit the wrong things. A typical marketing audit inventories what a business is doing - the channels, the campaigns, the tools, the team structure - and reports on it. This is useful as a checklist but almost useless for strategy. Is the business using tools that support the strategy, or has the tools tail started wagging the strategy dog? Too many businesses adopt sophisticated tools without clarity on what problem they are solving. Is the technology stack integrated, or are there data silos that prevent measurement? Dimension 5 is Customer Intelligence. Does the business understand who its customers are, how they buy, what messaging resonates, what concerns are top of mind? Is this intelligence data-driven, or based on founder assumptions? Dimension 6 is Competitive Positioning. How is the business positioned relative to the competition? Is the positioning defensible? Is it based on genuine differentiation, or is it claiming something the competitor already owns?

    In the Strategic Alignment dimension, good looks like: a clearly documented target customer profile with specific firmographic and behavioural characteristics; a value proposition that is articulated consistently across sales and marketing; a market positioning statement that is differentiated and defensible; agreement between marketing, sales, and product on what the business is and why customers prefer it. In the Channel Effectiveness dimension, good looks like: a documented view of where the target customer seeks information; channel investment proportional to customer acquisition results; clear SLAs between marketing and sales on lead quality; regular channel performance review and reallocation when results shift.

    In the Team Capability dimension, good looks like: marketing team members with appropriate seniority and skills for their responsibilities; a team structure aligned to the marketing strategy, not just functional silos; documented capability development plan; cross-functional collaboration between marketing, sales, and product. In the Technology Stack dimension, good looks like: tools that directly support execution of the strategy; data integration enabling measurement across channels; clear owners for each platform; regular evaluation of tool ROI. In the Customer Intelligence dimension, good looks like: documented customer research including interviews, surveys, and usage data; regular updates to customer understanding as the business evolves; customer feedback incorporated into product and marketing decisions. In the Competitive Positioning dimension, good looks like: documented competitive analysis; positioning based on unique capabilities or market focus, not just claim-making; customer research validating that differentiation is valued.
